To implement the "Ten, Hundred, Thousand" initiative on South-South cooperation on climate change proposed by President Xi Jinping at the Paris Climate Conference and to fulfill the Memorandum of Understanding between China and Nigeria on Cooperating in the building the Lekki Low-Carbon Demonstration Zone, thereby promoting strategic alignment and practical cooperation between China and Nigeria in the field of climate change, the Foreign Environmental Cooperation Center (FECO), guided by the Department of Climate Change of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of China (MEE), successfully organized the Nigeria Lekki Low-Carbon Demonstration Zone Capacity Building Exchange Workshop in Beijing and Tianjin from August 24 to 30, 2025. The event was attended by eight representatives from the Nigerian government, research institutions, non-governmental organizations, and enterprises.

During the event, the Nigerian delegation held talks with the Department of Climate Change of the MEE. The Nigerian side expressed sincere gratitude for China's long-term support and stated their hope to learn from China's technologies and experiences in green development and low-carbon transition through this visit. They also aimed to strengthen cooperation in areas such as low-carbon technologies, green finance, and carbon market development. Furthermore, they expressed their expectation to develop the Nigeria Lekki Low-Carbon Demonstration Zone into a model for South-South climate cooperation.

The delegation visited the School of Environment of Tsinghua University, where they engaged in in-depth exchanges on topics such as South-South climate cooperation and green low-carbon development. They also conducted field visits to the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area, the Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area, and the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City to gain a deeper understanding of the policies, technologies, and practices related to the green and low-carbon transition of industrial parks in China. The activity enhanced the Nigerian side's understanding of China's climate actions and clean energy transition, providing guidance for promoting China-Nigeria cooperation in addressing climate change.

The Lekki Low-Carbon Demonstration Zone is a key cooperation project between China and Nigeria under the framework of South-South cooperation on climate change. By jointly formulating the development plan for the Lekki Low-Carbon Demonstration Zone and conducting relevant exchange workshops and capacity-building activities, the project aims to support Nigeria in enhancing its capacity to address climate change. It also serves as a reference for comprehensive development zones in Belt and Road partner countries to explore low-carbon development pathways in energy, construction, transportation, and other sectors.
This event was the third capacity-building activity held since the launch of the "Africa Solar Belt" initiative under South-South cooperation on climate change. The event was hosted by FECO, co-organized by the Beijing Municipal Ecology and Environment Bureau, the Tianjin Municipal Ecology and Environment Bureau, and Tsinghua University, with support from the World Resources Institute.
