In implementation of the China-Africa Cooperation Declaration on Combating Climate Change and to build consensus among African countries in the field of climate change response, the Foreign Environmental Cooperation Center (FECO), under the guidance of the Department of Climate Change of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment (MEE), successfully held the China-Africa Climate Change and "Africa Solar Belt" Capacity Building Workshop from June 8 to 21, 2025. The workshop brought together 28 participants from 15 African countries: Mali, Kenya, Sao Tome and Principe, Togo, Chad, Burundi, Burkina Faso, Gabon, Ethiopia, Seychelles, Cameroon, Republic of the Congo, South Africa, Malawi, and Nigeria.

Spanning 14 days, the workshop was structured into classroom lectures, field visits, and exchange sessions, held in Suzhou, Yixing City of Jiangsu Province, and Shanghai. Experts and scholars in the environment and climate fields delivered lectures on topics including China’s efforts to build ecological civilization , renewable energy development, low-carbon industrial park development, global climate governance, and China-Africa cooperation on climate change. These sessions enhanced participants' understanding of global climate governance, China's climate policies and actions, clean energy development, low-carbon transition, and practical pathways.

Participants visited clean energy enterprises such as GoodWe, Jinko Solar, Ecoson, Guoke Green Materials, and Far East Battery for study exchanges. They also attended the 18th International Solar Photovoltaic and Smart Energy Conference & Exhibition in Shanghai. The delegates highly praised the innovative achievements and large-scale application results of Chinese companies across the entire industrial chain in areas like photovoltaic modules, energy storage systems, and green building materials.

Through participating in thematic workshops on "Policy Environment and Market Opportunities for Renewable Energy Development under South-South Cooperation" and "Sustainable Energy for Social Services," participants shared practical experiences from their respective countries and engaged in active dialogue on the prospects for China-Africa cooperation in climate change and clean energy, as well as innovative applications of renewable energy.

This workshop was the second capacity-building activity held since the launch of the "Africa Solar Belt" initiative under South-South cooperation on climate change, and a concrete measure to implement the "Ten, Hundred, Thousand" initiative on climate change South-South cooperation proposed by President Xi Jinping at the Paris Climate Conference. The workshop was co-organized by the Yixing Environmental Protection Technology Industrial Park Management Committee and the Chinese Renewable Energy Industries Association (CREIA), with support from the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group.
