On January 29, 2026, the handover ceremony for the Seychelles Low-Carbon Demonstration Zone Project under South-South Cooperation for Addressing Climate Change was held. H.E. Lin Nan, Chinese Ambassador to Seychelles, representing the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, and H.E. Marie-May Alice Jeremie, Seychelles’ Minister for Environment, Climate, Energy and Natural Resources, jointly attended the ceremony and signed the acceptance certificate, with President Patrick Herminie and several senior Seychellois officials witnessing the ceremony.

Ambassador Lin noted that President Xi Jinping has stressed that building a global ecological civilization requires the concerted efforts of all countries to jointly promote green, low-carbon, and sustainable development. The China-aided Seychelles Low-Carbon Demonstration Zone Project is an important outcome in implementing the Partnership Action for Green Development. As a small island state, Seychelles faces unique vulnerabilities. China will, as always, support Seychelles in addressing climate change and other challenges, and promote the building of a China-Seychelles community with a shared future featuring harmony between man and nature.

H.E. Marie-May Alice Jeremie appreciated China for its long-term support and noted that Seychelles will make good use of the supplies provided by China to benefit the people of Seychelles. She expressed readiness to learn from China’s advanced experience in green transition and pursue new progress in bilateral environmental cooperation.

The Seychelles Low-Carbon Demonstration Zone Project is a concrete measure to implement President Xi Jinping’s “Ten-Hundred-Thousand Initiative”, as well as the Beijing Declaration and the Action Plan of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). The project is managed and supported by the Foreign Environmental Cooperation Center of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, and aims to create a new model for China-Africa climate cooperation.
