On October 23, Mr. Huang Runqiu, Minister of Ecology and Environment of China met with Mr. Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Secretariat, in Beijing. The two sides held in-depth exchanges on topics including the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference in Belém and advancing the multilateral process of global climate governance.

Minister Huang stated that this year, through two video addresses delivered at key climate summits, President Xi Jinping announced China’s new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), demonstrating China’s firm resolve to promote green and low-carbon transformation and actively address climate change. Currently, the multilateral process of global climate governance faces increasing challenges and uncertainties. China looks forward to the UN Climate Change Conference in Belém upholding the banner of multilateralism, sending clear and positive political signals such as adhering to the objectives and principles of the UNFCCC and its Paris Agreement, and affirming that the global green and low-carbon transition is irreversible. The conference should focus on implementing NDCs through concrete actions and continuously addressing issues of funding and technological support. China is willing to work closely with the UNFCCC Secretariat and all parties to jointly support Brazil in hosting a Conference of the Parties that upholds principles, ensures fairness, advocates justice, promotes pragmatic cooperation and fosters cooperation, thereby injecting certainty and momentum into global climate governance.

Mr. Stiell highly appreciated China's leadership in the multilateral process of global climate governance and expressed his commitment to further strengthen communication and collaboration with China, firmly uphold and practice multilateralism, and promote the achievement of substantive outcomes at the UN Climate Change Conference in Belém
